Radiation therapists perform the Gamma Knife therapy as an outpatient procedure. A frame is fixed to the head with four pins to keep the head immobile. A local anesthetic is used at the pin site. The radiologist uses stereotactic MRI for targeting the precise location of the trigeminal nerve where it connects to the brain stem.
This prospective study included all patients who underwent gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) at our institute for cerebral AVM between 2006 and December 2008 (n = 34). All patients underwent neuropsychological evaluation before the procedure. Neuropsychological evaluation was repeated in eighteen patients 2 years following GKRS.
However, gamma rays can also be used to treat cancer. Radiation therapy, or radiotherapy, uses high-energy gamma rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumours. Gamma Knife Radiosurgery is a special form of radiotherapy. It uses beams of gamma rays to treat injured brain tissue by damaging the DNA of dangerous cells.
Gamma Knife brain surgery is a unique treatment method that delivers extremely focused radiation beams to targets in the brain. One hundred and ninety-two individual beams of radiation are positioned in a hemisphere so that all the beams can converge on a single focal point. The shape and dose of radiation is optimized to hit only the target, without damaging surrounding healthy tissue.
Essential Tremor Treatment. There is no definitive cure for essential tremor. Symptomatic drug therapy may include propranolol or other beta blockers and primidone, an anticonvulsant drug. Eliminating tremor "triggers" such as caffeine and other stimulants from the diet may be recommended. Physical therapy may help to reduce tremor and improve
Nov 11, 2011 · Gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) is an effective treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Previous series have shown the benefit to be a ≥50% reduction of pain in 77–95% of patients treated with GKRS ( 1 – 16 ).
